Regular commuters on the Gujarat University road, on the way towards Vijay crossroads were surprised to see two green patches right on the road. What used to be a choc-a-bloc parking spot was turned into a public space where people enjoyed activities ranging from traffic education to puppetry show to live music.
It was part of the international initiative known as Park(ing) Day where parking spaces were temporarily converted into a park to show people what can be achieved by careful management of parking spaces and keeping the number of vehicles in the city under check.
Talking about the initiative, Anuj Malhotra, programme director, Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), said that the vehicle pattern in cities like Ahmedabad is going through a changing phase.
